Creating a Manufacturing Part

Manufacturing Engineers and Senior Manufacturing Engineers can create one or more new manufacturing parts. You can create subtypes of manufacturing parts.

After the part is created, you can click Edit Details from the Actions menu of the part Properties page to make changes.

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Click > Manufacturing > Create Manufacturing Part
    • From edit mode of the MBOM Plant-Specific view (Current & Pending) of a BOM, click Actions > Add New or Actions > Insert New.
      Note: Manufacturing parts in the Preliminary state can be added to any part in the MBOM assembly or under other manufacturing parts. This requires a context MCO in the Create state.
  2. Enter details about the part.

    FieldDescription
    TypeThe type defaults to Material Part, or you can click to select a different type or subtype.
    Part NameType a unique name for the part, or check AutoName and select an option from AutoName Series to have the system assign a name.
    PolicySelect a policy from the list, which by default displays manufacturing part.
    Custom Revision LevelIf you want to use a revision other than the default defined in the selected policy, enter a revision number or code.
    Number of PartsType the number of parts you want to create. When creating multiple parts at the same time, you must use AutoName and select an AutoName Series.
    Part FamilyClick to search for a part family to be associated with the part for classification purposes or for part number generation. See About Searches.
    Basic Attributes
    DescriptionEnter concise details that describe the new part. Use any alphanumeric characters (numbers, letters, or allowed symbols).
    OwnerPerson who will have responsibility for the part. Defaults to the name of the logged-in user.
    Target Release DateClick and select a target date for the part to become effective in the bill of materials.
    Change to Release This field is "Disabled" for the Manufacturing Part create page. You cannot select any value for this field.
    Manufacturing Attributes
    End Item Always reports No for manufacturing parts. This is shown only when Manufacturing BOM Management is installed.
    Design PurchaseFrom the list, select ‘Purchase’ to indicate that the part can be given a make/buy code of ‘Make’ in the MBOM. Select ‘Design’ to indicate that the part can be given any make/buy code in the MBOM.

    This field is editable for all revisions for a development part. Once a part has been released, this attribute cannot be edited on any future revisions of the part, regardless of state. To change the Design Purchase, a new part must be created.

    MCO to Implement ChangeClick to search for the MCO to connect to the part. Only MCO Standard policies in the Create state are displayed. See About Searches.
    Spare PartSelect Yes or No from the list to indicate whether the part is to be used as a spare.
    Lead TimeFrom the list, select the time that it will take to manufacture the part.
    Purchasing Attributes
    Estimated CostEnter the estimated cost on a per part basis.
    Target CostEnter the target cost on a per part basis.
    Technical Attributes
    Unit of MeasureSelect a unit of measure from the list: LB (pound), IN (inch), GA (gallon), FT (feet), and EA (each).
    Material CategorySelect the substance the part is made of. Default values are: Metal, Plastic, Glass, Rubber, Concrete.
    WeightEnter the weight of the part.
    Part ClassificationSelect the general category of part from the list. Default values are: Unassigned, Wiring Harness, Software, Sheet Metal, Printed Circuit Board, Molded, Machined, Hardware, Extrusion, Other.
    Other Attributes
    Design Collaboration Select True or False to specify whether this part will be synchronized to VPM.
    Related Physical Title The product name value that corresponds to the VPM attribute V_name.

  3. Click Done to add the new part to the database.
    If you are creating multiple parts at the same time, the multiple part Edit page opens automatically. See Editing Multiple Parts.

    If you are adding a manufacturing part to BOM, you must also specify at least a quantity value and either a find number or reference designator.
