Creating Traceability Channels

Once the scope is initiated with root elements, you can create traceability channels between them. With these channels, you define the context (or scope) of your traceability analysis.

Note: A traceability channel is equivalent to a reference-reference implement link (also called context link), in an RFLP system. In an RFLP system, implement links are created from the less abstract level (logical, or even physical) to the most abstract level (requirement or functional). The traceability channel should follow the same rule.

Before you begin: Create a scope with elements. See Creating and Editing a Scope.
  1. To open the scope object, click Scope in the tree.
The scope is displayed in the work area.
  2. From the context toolbar, click Edit to enter the edit mode.
  3. To create a traceability channel, drag a first element:
    Drop locationType of Link
    Onto a second element

    Creates a direct traceability channel.
    Onto an existing traceability channel

    Creates a combined traceability channel.

Important: Depending on the type of the traceability channel (direct or combined), the computation rule of the coverage percentage is different. See About Traceability Computation.

Tip: By default, if a channel is detected outside the scope, a warning is displayed. Administrators can customize the corresponding preference. For more information, see Customizing Administrator Preferences.

  4. To delete a traceability channel:
    1. Select a channel.
    2. Click Delete from the context toolbar.
    3. Optional: If your selection is a combined traceability channel, the Delete Links dialog box appears. Select the sources to be detached.

To display and complete the existing traceability for these channels, enter the coverage view. For more information, see Analyzing Coverage in the Graphical View.
