About As-Built BOM

An As-Built BOM is like a standard BOM, but is used to track end-item components that are delivered to the customer or sold as accessory or replacement parts. It provides the ability to manage a multi-level BOM structure and perform manufacturing actions on a part. The As-Built BOM has filters for further navigation of the BOM.

The As-Built BOM structure contains child units, which can be either builds or lots. Anyone who has the role of either Manufacturer Planner or Product Planner can manage and edit the As-Built structure, including performing manufacturing actions like Install, Install After Ship, Uninstall, Allocate and Deallocate to update the As-Built BOM.

Install Unit

Installing a unit (build/lot) refers to the physical installation of a child unit to an assembly. You can install one or more allocated or uninstalled units on the As-Built BOM. Once a unit is installed to a parent build, it cannot be allocated or installed to another parent build.

There are two methods to install a unit:

  • Install an Allocated Unit
  • Install an Uninstalled Unit

You can select one or multiple units with Allocated or Uninstalled status on the As-Built BOM for installation. Once an uninstalled unit is installed, the As-Built status of the installed unit changes from Uninstalled to Installed. The installed date is changed to the current system date. As the selected unit is already in the As-Built BOM, no new connection is established after installation.

Install After Ship

The Install After Ship action adds the flexibility to install the builds at the shipping location. It changes the As-Built status of selected units to "Install After Ship," which qualifies them to ship with the assembly, and updates the Install After Ship date.

Only builds or lots that have a status of Allocated or Uninstalled can be changed to Install After Ship. If you attempt to change to Install After Ship the status of builds or lots that have a status of Installed, an alert message is shown.

Uninstall Unit

Uninstalling a unit does not disconnect or remove the unit from its parent until it is installed or allocated in another BOM. The As-Built status is changed to Uninstall. You can uninstall only installed units, not allocated units. The install date for the unit is not changed but the uninstall date is updated to the system date. You can make changes to the uninstalled unit in edit mode.

Allocate Unit

Allocating a unit reserves a child unit for its parent As-Built unit but it is not physically installed. You can allocate an existing installed or uninstalled unit on the As-Built BOM, which changes its status to Allocate.

There are two methods to allocate a unit:

  • Allocating an Installed Unit
  • Allocating an Uninstalled Unit

A unit can be allocated to only one As-Built BOM. It cannot be already allocated to another parent As-Built BOM. The Allocated Date is updated to the system date. As the allocated unit is already in the As-Built BOM, no new connection is established after allocation. The status is changed to Allocate.

Deallocate Unit

Deallocating a unit removes the reserved child unit from the parent As-Built BOM. Deallocating a unit disconnects it from the parent unit. The parent As-Built BOM cannot be in the Release or Shipped state to deallocate the child unit.

Shipping the As-Built BOM

Before a build is shipped, that is, before it is promoted from the Complete state to Release, its As-Built structure must be complete. When it is shipped, a read-only snapshot of the As-Shipped view is captured.

  • None of the builds/lots should be beyond the Complete state in its lifecycle.
  • Builds/lots should have status Installed or Install After Ship. Any other status is not allowed for shipping. An error message will be shown.
  • Every build/lot should have an assigned part number, build serial number, and product (for builds).

Property Settings for As-Built BOM

The Install and Allocate actions depend on the property settings configured in the system. The default setting for creating or adding an existing unit is Allocate. You can change the setting or configure it to install as required.
