About Roles and Apps

The roles available in your platform are those that you or your company have purchased or those that you have created yourself using the Creating a Custom Role command. You can grant roles and apps to any member of the platform. You can also make additional apps available to everyone. You can create your own additional apps or use those available by default, that is, CATIA V5 and SOLIDWORKS. You can search the available roles and apps either in the search field of the top bar or in the one available on the top-right of the Roles and Additional Apps sections.

To use a role, you need to consume a license, which is purchased with the role.

On premises only: The licenses are sent to you by email, so that you can enroll them on your DS License Server. For more information about license management, see Installation and Setup: Install: 3DEXPERIENCE Platform: License Control.
On the cloud only: The licenses are directly sent to the DS License Server that manages your platforms on the cloud. Depending on the role type, you can reuse or not the same license on different cloud platforms.

The different types of roles are as follows:

  • Roles whose license is linked to a platform, among which:
    • Platform roles: theses roles bring basic apps and allow native apps to access platforms. By default, users need a license on each platform they access. However, you can allow them to reuse a platform license on other platforms. For more information, see Customizing Roles and Licenses Assignment & Collaboration Principles.
    • More specific roles that enable additional web apps. You must grant the license linked to the platform, so if the user needs to access two platforms with such a role, he needs two roles and two licenses. However, you can also allow your users to reuse certain licenses of this kind on other platforms. For more information, see Customizing Roles and Licenses Assignment & Collaboration Principles
  • Roles whose license is not linked to a platform, which are necessary to launch native apps. With one license, the user can access several platforms, provided you have granted him the corresponding role and the required platform roles on each platform.
Note: If your company has purchased access to one platform only, when you remove a member, any granted license which is not linked to a specific platform will be automatically released.
The sections below let you access the roles and apps that you can grant.

The Roles section displays:

  • The number of unlimited or casual roles that your company have purchased. i.e. Roles | 106.
Note: You can filter roles by clicking and choose one of the following criteria:
    • Roles granted: displays granted roles.
    • Roles capacity almost reached: displays nearly full roles with their usage percentage.
    • Roles expiring soon: displays roles expiring soon.
  • A paginated list of the roles available in the platform. The number of roles displayed per page is based on the preferences of the Members Control Center widget. See Customizing Members & Roles Preferences. The navigation links are available at the bottom of the section. You can navigate through the list of pages by clicking either the next and prev links or the number of a page. If you have selected the Allow administrators to grant roles without assigning the associated license option in the Configure Members Invitations sub-tab, a filter lets you display roles without any license, which are roles for which your company has not purchased any license for this platform but that you can grant to users having licenses from another platform.
  • An ID card per role that provides the following information:
    • The percentage of the role licenses that is already used.
    • The name of the role. i.e. 3D Merchandiser.
    • The roles' expiration date and time. i.e October 10, 2016 1:59 AM.
    • The number of users granted against the number of available roles. i.e. 3 Used: 1/200 | Expiration Date M/DD/YY In this example, there is one user consuming one of the two hundred licenses available in the platform.

The Additional Apps section displays:

  • Two additional apps are available by default: CATIA V5 and SOLIDWORKS.They enable the integration of those apps into the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. They are private by default. You can grant them to users or make them public so that all users can have them in their Compass, like any additional app.

On premises only: These apps will be visible in the Compass only if the user is also granted a role enabling 3DSpace data management such as 3D Component Designer.

For more information, see Social and Collaborative: 3DEXPERIENCE Open: Connector for CATIA V5 and Social and Collaborative: 3DEXPERIENCE Open: Connector for SOLIDWORKS.

Moreover, the scope of functionality/data management capabilities provided by these additional apps depends on the roles granted to the user and also on the data source of the possible selected object when clicking the additional app icon. In case of multi-objects selection, the data source of the first object will be taken into account.

The specific behaviors are explained below:

    For CATIA V5:

No selected object Selected object from 3DDrive Selected object from 3DSpace

Those provided by default by the platform in addition to those that you or any other administrator have added using Create Additional App. For more information, See Adding Additional Apps.
