About Segments Connections

Segments connections let you connect electrically your branches using two types of connections.

  • A geometrical connection connects segments electrically by adding the electrical object selected for the connection to the route of the branch and modifies the shape of the branch.
  • A distant connection connects segments electrically without adding the electrical object selected for the connection to the route of the branch. Therefore, a distant connection has no impact on the route of a branch.

Connection Points

Electrical connections can be created between two segments or between a segment and a device.

To connect two segments together, you can use:

  • Segment extremities
  • Branch points

To connect a segment with a device, you can use the following connection points:

  • Cavity
  • Segment connection point
  • Junction point

Geometrical and Distant Connections

When you create an electrical connection using the Connect Segments command, the option Electrical link driven by geometry lets you define if the route of your branch is impacted by the connection of its segments.

In the 3D area, the following symbols indicate the connection status:

The segment extremity is not connected.
The segment extremity is connected.
The connection is geometrical.
The connection is distant.

Geometrical Connections

When the option is selected, a geometrical connection is created. Therefore, the element selected for the connection is added to the route of the branch, and the shape of the branch is updated accordingly.

If you edit the position of the element selected for the connection, the shape of the branch is impacted.

The segment is not connected.

The route of the branch is extended and the segment is connected geometrically.

The route of the branch is updated and the geometrical connection is kept.

Distant Connections

When the option is cleared, a distant connection is created. The segment and the element selected for the connection are electrically connected but there is no geometrical constraint between the branch and the connected element.

If you edit the position of the element connected to the segment, the route of the branch is not impacted.

The segment is not connected.

There is no impact on the branch route. The segment is connected.

The distant connection is kept.

Impacts on Distant Connections

Modifying the route of your branch using the following commands can impact distant connections:

  • Classic Branch Definition
  • Immersive Branch Definition
  • Connect Segments

Considering the following example, the impacts of the branch routing are described below:

Connected segment extremity: Ext_1
Distant connection
Any connection point loaded or not

Action Impact on Distant Connection
Remove Ext_1 Kept
Important: If there are less than two route elements in the branch route after removing the segment extremity, the distant connection is removed.
Add after Ext_1... … An intermediate route element Kept
… An extremity such as:
  • Segment extremity
  • Branch point
  • Cavity
  • Segment connection point
  • Junction point
 Replaced by a geometrical connection
Important: If you add a junction point and want to keep the distant connection:
  • While using the routing commands, the option Geometrical link with a new point at Junction point location must be selected.
  • While using the Connect Segments command, the options Electrical link driven by geometry and Geometrical link with a new point at Junction point location must be selected.

Replace Ext_1... … With an intermediate route element Kept
… With an extremity such as:
  • Segment extremity
  • Branch point
  • Cavity
  • Segment connection point
  • Junction point
 Replaced by a geometrical connection
Important: If you replace your extremity with a junction point and want to keep the distant connection:
  • While using the routing commands, the option Geometrical link with a new point at Junction point location must be selected.
  • While using the Connect Segments command, the options Electrical link driven by geometry and Geometrical link with a new point at Junction point location must be selected.
