Overall Architecture

Before starting to install Study Design and Tracking and Unified Lab Management you should understand the architecture of these two systems, their communication, and their interoperability.



Single sign in and log out between 3DPassport and Foundation Hub.
3DPassport
  • Communicates the username and domain to Foundation Hub
  • Manages single log out
Study Design and Tracking
  • Creates, plans, and manages studies
  • Obtains Activities from Foundation Hub
  • Obtains Batches from CISPro
  • Creates Task Plans in Foundation Hub
Foundation Hub
  • Provides single sign on for all Foundation Hub services
  • Manages Users and Permissions
  • Defines Activities
  • Integrates with Equipment
  • Tracks Tasks
Pipeline Pilot provides data pipelining tools and reports.
CISPro manage Materials, Batches and Containers across Labs and Sites.

Each component of the Study Design and Tracking solution must be installed and configured for users to complete their workflows. If any component is not properly configured, users will not be able to perform all their tasks.

Unified Lab Management

The Unified Lab Management suite provides a single point of entry and communication with all BIOVIA applications used in Study Design and Tracking workflows, but not installed on 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

Foundation Hub

Foundation Hub manages all other applications in a Unified Lab Management environment.

Set the following configuration options appropriately:

  • Users: All users who need to access Study Design and Tracking must be available through Foundation Hub. There are several methods of managing users:
    • For completely new installations, you must create identical sets of users in Foundation Hub and in 3DPassport.
    • If you already have a Foundation Hub installation with users defined, these same users must also be available in 3DPassport. Grant the appropriate Study Design and Tracking permissions to users.
    • If you allow auto-provisioning of users in Foundation Hub, grant them the appropriate Study Design and Tracking permissions.

  • Authentication: Configure Foundation Hub to use 3DPassport authentication. See Configure 3DPassport Authentication in Foundation Hub.
  • Certificates: The cooperative single sign-on and single log out of users between Foundation Hub and 3DPassport requires that each service uses HTTPS communication and has a valid certificate for the other. If a certificate is not valid for one service, specify it as permitted for the other service.

    Add a certificate for the 3DPassport server to Foundation Hub. See Install a 3DPassport Certificate in Foundation Hub.

  • Applications: Foundation Hub requires that all applications whose communication it manages are registered.
  • If required, add a custom conversion factor for month time units. See Configuring Custom Dates in Foundation Hub.

Pipeline Pilot Server

Pipeline Pilot protocols drive data creation, transfer, and status between Study Design and Tracking and Unified Lab Management applications. For example, creating tasks, querying task status, obtaining information on samples and batches.

Install the Study Design and Tracking protocols on a Pipeline Pilot Server registered in the same Foundation Hub.

Set the following configuration options on your Pipeline Pilot Server:

CISPro

Foundation Hub requires that all applications whose communication it manages are registered. Refer to the BIOVIA CISPro Installation Guide for more information.

Compose & Capture

Foundation Hub requires that all applications whose communication it manages are registered. Refer to the BIOVIA Compose & Capture Installation Guide for more information.

3DEXPERIENCE Integration with ULM

Foundation Hub completely manages the integration of 3DEXPERIENCE with ULM. You do not need to perform any additional configuration of 3DEXPERIENCE or Study Design and Tracking.

The Study Design and Tracking app in a 3DDashboard automatically connects to the appropriate Pipeline Pilot Server using its fully qualified domain name.
