Creating a Revision from an Existing Object

You can create a new revision of a structure integrating changes from another structure, that can be one of its revisions, duplicates, or branches.

The New Revision From command allows you to also revise the children of the selected object.

With the New Revision From command, you can use the following objects to create the new revision:

  • Any revision of the selected object, in any branch of the revision family
  • Any revision of any duplicate of the selected object

Note: The enterprise item number, if any, is copied from the latest revision in the source branch, independently from the selected revision. For more information, see Engineering Release User's Guide: Managing Engineering Items: Specifying Enterprise Item Numbers for Engineering Items.

Context: The following diagram shows examples of revisions created from existing objects:

A new revision of P1 D (selected revision) is created in the P1 branch, using the content of P3 B. Therefore, P1 and P3 branches are merged.

Create a Revision from an Existing Object

Before you begin:

  1. Create revisions, duplicates, or branches of the object you want to revise, that you can use as a source for the new revision.
  2. Select an object, and click New Revision From . Depending on the app, this command might be available from the action bar, a context menu, or from the context menu of the Revision Explorer.

    The New Revision From dialog box appears. The structure of the object you selected is displayed in the Reference Structure column.

  1. If several sources for the new revision are available, in the Source Structure column, select the one you want to use for the new revision in the Revision Explorer. For more information, see Revision Explorer.
  2. For each object of the structure, choose whether you want to revise, reuse, insert as new, or exclude the object.

    Important:
    • Only the Revise option is available for the root of the structure.
    • If you select the Reuse, Exclude, and Insert as new option for an object, the same option is automatically applied to its children.

    The Result Preview column displays the structure of the new revision.
  3. Click Revise.

The new revision is created using the selected object, according to the options you specified. This revision appears in the user interface.

If you selected large data and the operation requires a prolonged amount of time to complete, a message appears. The operation continues in the background, and a notification appears in the 3DNotification Center when it is completed, if Collaborative Lifecycle notifications are activated. Choose Preferences for the New Revision From Command

You can choose your preferences for the New Revision From command. These preferences apply to the command in all dashboard apps.

  1. From the toolbar at the upper-right corner of the New Revision From dialog box, click Settings .
  2. Choose your settings for the following options:

    Option Description

    Copy title from source

    Uses the title of the objects in the source structure for the new revisions.

    By default, this option is cleared, and the title of the objects in the reference structure is used for the new revisions.

    Display warning if access rights do not allow revising

    Displays a warning report when objects cannot be revised.

    This report lists these objects and the Message column provides the reason why the object cannot be revised.

    You can also:

    • View the properties of an object: select it in the report, and then click Information .

      For more information, see Properties and Information.

    • Export the report as a .csv file: click Export .

    By default, this option is cleared, and the Reuse option is automatically applied to the objects that cannot be revised.

  3. Click Save.
