Editing a Configured Part Bill of Materials

Though a Configured BOM can contain unconfigured and configured parts, you can make changes only in a configured context.

Required Access Roles:

  • Baseline: Reader, Author
  • App-specific: Global User, Design Engineer

These rules apply:

  • To delete a part from a configured BOM, you must have either the Author or Leader role and be assigned to the same collaborative space in which the part resides. (App-specific roles:Design Engineer, Senior Design Engineer)
  • To add a part to a configured part, you must have either the Author or Leader role and be assigned to or be connected to the same collaborative space in which the part resides.
  • A Configured BOM can be changed only for preliminary or current configured parts.
  • Preliminary Configured BOMs work in development mode.
  • You cannot edit effectivity for unconfigured parts, if any, that the configured part contains.
  • If the Configured BOM is change-required, you can assign current effectivity without assigning Work Under change to any part(s) whose immediate parent is configured and not change-required.
  • Current effectivity that you apply will override any Work Under change that is assigned to the BOM.
  • You cannot add, remove, or modify an unconfigured part in a Configured BOM if the unconfigured part is beyond the In Work state.

All BOM markup functionality is disabled when you edit a Configured BOM.

Before you begin:

Access the EBOM page for a configured part. See Configured Part Bill of Materials.

  1. Click to open the Refinements panel.
  2. Select Projected in Configuration View.
  3. From the page toolbar, click Enable Edit Mode.
  4. Edit the values in the columns below as required. Either type in each cell or select Mass Update to change multiple items.

    Column Description
F/N Find Numbers are identifiers used on drawings as "bubble" callouts.
Ref Des The Reference Designator ID indicates where a component is to be inserted on printed circuit cards.
Component Location Similar to a Reference Designator, this gives additional location information and/or can be used by industries other than electronics. For example, it can be used to indicate which motor is failing all the time, the one by the window or the one by the furnace.
Qty The quantity of the selected part to be included in the BOM.
Note: If the Unit of Measure is set to "EA (each)", only positive integers are allowed for Qty. After you save your changes, each instance of the selected part shows on a separate line and all will have the same properties (including effectivity). Once added, each instance can be edited independently.
Usage Standard, Reference, Per Sales Order, or As Required.
Part Family This field is editable when you select Insert New under Inline Edit.
-- The columns below apply to effectivity definitions for parts. These columns are displayed when decoupling is disabled.
Proposed Effectivity Proposed effectivity can be unit, date, and product revision. This field is read-only.
Current Effectivity Click to define the unit, date, and product revision effectivity. You can edit this column only if the parent part is change-disabled. If the parent is change-required, this column is read-only. Use a Work Under CA to propose a change in the evolution effectivity. If the part is change-required, this field is read-only but can be modified using a Work Under change.
-- The columns below apply to effectivity definitions for parts. These columns are displayed when decoupling is enabled.
Projected Evolution Projected Evolution can be unit, date, and product revision. This field is read-only. See Building or Editing an Effectivity Expression.
Current Evolution Click to define the unit, date, and product revision effectivity. You can edit this column only if the parent part is change-disabled. If the parent is change-required, this column is read-only. Use a Work Under CA to propose a change in the evolution effectivity. If the part is change-required, this field is read-only but can be modified using a Work Under change. See Building or Editing an Effectivity Expression.
Variant Click to define the feature option Effectivity (if Variant Management is installed). You can edit the Variant column regardless of whether the parent part is change-enabled or disabled. However, if the parent is change-required, you must select a Work Under CA to modify the Variant field. See Building or Editing an Effectivity Expression.
Effectivity This column appears only if decoupling is enabled. Shows effectivity expressions that have variant and evolution defined and separated by an OR operator. To separate the evolution and variant expressions, you must define them separately in the Current Evolution and Variant columns.

To use in-cell editing, click in the cell and type changes in the field or select an option from the list.

    To use Mass Update:

    1. To make changes only to certain items, select the items.
    2. From the Mass Update menu, select the attribute you want to change.
    3. In the box, enter the new value for the attribute. To change the Current Effectivity, click . See Building or Editing an Effectivity Expression.
    4. Click Apply to Selected or Apply to All.

The Change Type column shows different icons to indicate which type of changes have been made. Changes are shown in the table columns in colored text.

      Icon Description
Indicates that items have been added. Details about the added item are shown in green text.
Indicates that items have been modified. Details are shown in black next to red strike-through text.
Indicates that items have been removed. Details about the removed item are shown in red strike-through text.

  5. To add or remove a part, select the part and select from the page Actions menu or toolbar.

    Command Description
Add Existing Search for and add an unconfigured or configured part that exists in the database to the BOM. If you select a part in the BOM, the part is added as a child part for that part. See Predefined Queries.
Add New Create a part to add to the BOM. Multiple part create is supported. See Creating a Part.
Inline Edit Add a new row to the BOM. Add part details by clicking a cell in the row or using Mass Update. Editable fields are marked with a triangle in the upper-left corner. See Creating a Part for field descriptions.
    • Insert New . A new row is added to the beginning of the BOM. If you select a part in the BOM before you click Insert New, the part is added as a child part for that part.
      • Type, Name, Policy, and Revision are mandatory columns required for Insert New.
      • For development configured parts (preliminary parent part), the Current Effectivity is mandatory.
      • The Type column is Part. It supports type-ahead.
      • The Revision column is Latest Released .
      • The Name column contains a list that supports AutoName series and guide entry for name
      • The Policy field contains a list of the following range values: Development Part, EC Part, Configured Part

After you enter details for Insert New Row, click Save to add a new child part to the Configured BOM and the effectivity for the selected CA with applicability assigned as the context change is set as proposed effectivity (for Released parent parts).

    • Insert Existing . Search for and add a part that exists in the database to the BOM. Click the cell in the Name column and enter a name in the text field, then click Lookup Entries from the page toolbar to perform a part search based on the criteria entered. Use inline edit to change part details. If you select a part in the BOM before you click Insert Existing, the part is added as a child part for that part. See Predefined Queries.
      • The Type column is Part . It supports type-ahead.
      • The Revision column is Latest Released .
      • The Policy field contains a list of the following range values: Development Part, EC Part, Configured Part.
    • To remove inserted rows, click from the page toolbar.

After a successful lookup has been performed, click Save to add a new child part to the Configured BOM and the effectivity for the selected CA with effectivity assigned as the context change is set as proposed effectivity (for Released parent parts).

Copy From Copy from the selected part on the BOM structure. See Using Copy From in a Configured BOM.
Replace with Existing Search for a part that exists in the database to replace a part in the BOM. See Predefined Queries. See the note below.
Replace with New Replace the part in the BOM with a new part. See Creating a Part for field descriptions. See the note below.
Remove Remove items from the BOM. This disconnects the items from the parent part, but does not delete the items from the database.

If the relationship between a parent and child part (item that needs to be removed) is EBOM Pending, select the CA with applicability that was used to add the part. See the note below.

Note: A Configured BOM with an Effectivity value displays 'INVALID' when a pending or released component remove action nullifies its effectivity. For example, if a component with Current Effectivity value of ProductLine [1-100] is cut (removal) via a Change Context CA with an applicability and with effectivity of ProductLine [1-100], will completely remove it. Thus, the value would be 'ProductLine[INVALID].

  6. Click Save to save changes.
  7. If Prompted, click the Select the Work Under Change icon in the EBOM tab toolbar. Search for and select a CA to make changes.
  8. You can click Reset from the page toolbar at any time during the editing process to undo all pending changes made in the BOM.
