Creating a Part

You can create top-level parts or subtypes of parts. After creating a part, you can use it for other tasks such as assigning change objects to it as well as use it in a BOM structure.

Required Access Roles:

  • App-specific: Design Engineer or Senior Design Engineer.
  • Baseline: Author or Leader. IP Classification users with the roles Librarian or Limited Author can create development parts.

After creating the part, you can edit the part properties. Click Edit Details in the part Properties tab toolbar and make changes as required.

You can also duplicate the part from an existing part. See Duplicating a Part.

Although change-required is typically applied to production parts, you can create production parts with change-required disabled. You can apply change-required later by opening the part and selecting Set Change Required in the part's Properties tab toolbar.

Creating a Part from a Part Family
  1. To create a part, do one of the following:

    • From the top bar, click > Engineering > Part > Create Part.
    • To add a new part to the EBOM of an existing part, open the EBOM page of the existing part and then:
      1. Select a part in the EBOM that will be the parent of the new part. To add the new part to the root, selecting the root is optional.
      2. Select one of these commands in the toolbar:
        • Insert Part and choose a menu option.
        • Replace By > Replace by New Part.
      Note: To use other commands in the Insert As Child menu, selecting a part is optional.

    Only users with Create access for parts will see these commands.

  2. Enter details about the part, including the following:

    Field Description
    Type Select the type of part you want to create. Click if you are creating a subtype. See Selecting a Type.
    Note: When you select a Raw Material, design collaboration is turned off and disabled.
    Name and AutoName Series The part name. You can enter a name or allow the system to generate a name. Enter a unique part name into the Name field or select AutoName and choose an option from the AutoName Series list.
    Note: If you enter a value in the Part Family field, the AutoName Series will be "Part Family" and you cannot enter a part name. The part name will be generated based on the requirements of the part family.
    If the Production phase vs Development phase is selected, the revision is generated based on the phase's revision sequence.
    Title The product name value that corresponds to the CATIA name. Enter a title. If left empty, the title will be shown as the part name.
    Description Enter details that describe the new part.
    Phase Select either Development or Production.
    Options - Enable Change Required To enable change-required to a part when creating it, select "Enable Change Required" in the Create Part slide-in.

    For development phase parts, change-required is optional and you can either select or clear this box. This box is automatically selected and cannot be cleared when:

    • You create a child part for a parent part that is change-required.
    • You select a change action in the Work Under Change field. The created part becomes change-required.

    Note: If you apply change-required to a part without selecting a Work Under Change while creating the part, you must still select a work under CA before you can edit the part.

    When a part is under change-required, the associated CO/CA controls the release of the part.

    Part revisions are treated independently. One revision of a part can be under change-required in one lifecycle state while another revision is in a different state or not under change-required at all.

    Options - Configured Check this box to apply the Configured Part policy to the part. Clear this box to apply the EC Part policy. This field appears if Configured BOM Management is installed
    Work Under Change Assign a work under change action (CA) to the part. The work under CA is required if you enable change-required; otherwise, the work under CA is optional. See About Work Under Changes.
    Part Family Click to search for a part family to be associated with the part for classification purposes or for part number generation. The part name uses the name format that the part family defines.
    Note: If you select a part family, the AutoName Series will be "Part Family" and the AutoName check box will be selected.
    Number of Parts Enter the number of parts you want to create (up to 100). When creating multiple parts at the same time, you must either select an active part family that has the Name Generator attribute set to "On," or use AutoName and select an AutoName Series.
    Engineering
    Unit of Measure Select a unit of measure and a unit of measurement type (Weight, etc.). You can select the type in the bill of materials only when adding a part using either the Insert Part > Insert as Child > New Part or Insert Part > Insert Below > New Part command.
    Estimated Weight Type the estimated weight of the part and select a unit of measure for the weight from the list.
    Target Release Date Click and select a target date for the part to become effective in the bill of materials.

    The actual effective date is determined by the release date of the change object that releases the bill of materials the part is used in.

    Supply Chain/Production
    Estimated Cost The approximate, predicted cost of the part per unit of measure.
    Target Cost Type the estimated cost per part. Select the currency.
    Spare Part Select Yes or No to specify whether the part is to be used as a spare.
    Procurement Intent Select "Make" if the part is to be made in-house. Otherwise, select "Buy".
    Lead Time From the list, select the time required to either obtain or manufacture the part.
    End Item Indicate whether the part is an end item. If Yes, this value will not be editable for subsequent revisions. This is shown only when Manufacturing BOM Management is installed.
    Assigned Product If End Item is Yes, click to select a product. Shown only if Manufacturing BOM Management is installed.
    Extended Attributes
    {Other attributes} Depending on the requirements of your organization, the Create Part form may include additional fields for you to complete to create the part. The part type you choose will determine the attribute fields, if any, that appear in the form.

  3. Click OK.
    If you are creating multiple parts at the same time, the multiple part Edit page opens automatically. For details, see Editing Multiple Parts.
