Alternate

Products used as alternates for a physical product appear in the alternate products list. To open the alternates list for a product:

  1. Open a product.
  2. Click Information and select the Alternate tab.

Properties

The list shows these properties for each alternate product. A '+' signifies that more than one primary product uses the alternate product. You can click the '+' to expand the list of primary products.

Note: For alternate products associated with only the selected instance, the Product Title, and Revision, with Instance Name also appear in the list.

Properties that are specific to alternates are listed below. For other properties, see Properties in the Product Structure Tree.

Column Description
Title The title of the alternate product.
Enterprise Item Number Displays the Enterprise Item Number of the Alternate product.
Revision The revision of the product defined as the alternate product.
Maturity State Displays the state of the alternate product.
Alternate Qualifications Status For alternate products associated with multiple primary products, the Alternate Qualification Status indicates whether the alternate product is applicable and for which contexts. The status of the alternate product:



Proposed
The object is under consideration to be used as a candidate. It must still be qualified before it can be used as an alternate product.


Qualified
The object is qualified for the usage described in the Usage(s) column.


Qualified (Proposed for Obsolete)
The object is proposed for Obsolete. The object becomes obsolete when the associated change action is completed.


Obsolete
The object is obsolete for the usage described in the Usage(s) column.

Usage(s) Indicates where the alternate product is used:

All Usages - Specifies that the alternate product is applicable in any usage of the primary product.

All Instances under {Title and revision of parent and instance name} - The object is an alternate product only for the specified instances under the parent.

Instance {Title and revision of parent} - The alternate product is applicable to the specified instance of the primary item under this parent.

Note: For alternate products associated with multiple primaries, the Usage column also shows the total number of instances with which the alternate product is associated.

Toolbar Commands

Command Description
Filter

Filter connected alternate products based on their qualifications status. Select one or more options in the list. The filter applies to the selected objects (if any) in the child product list. If none is selected, the filter applies to the openproduct.
Add to Change

Associate a change action to an alternate product in the list. For more information, see Qualify an Alternate Product with Change Management.
Add

Search for and add an alternate product to the list.
Qualify

Approve an alternate product in the list. Select one or more alternate products and click the . After an alternate product is approved, it becomes Qualified.
Remove

Remove an alternate product from the list. Select one or more alternate products and click the icon.
Obsolete

Declare an alternate product to be obsolete. An obsolete alternate product is no longer qualified to replace the primary product in the specified usage.
Group By

Group alternate products in the list by None, Reference, Enterprise Item Number, Maturity Status, Alternate Qualification Status, or Usage Scope.
Big Tiles View /Datagrid View Display the list either as tiles or as a table.

Commands

You can right-click an alternate product in the list and select one of the following:

Command Description
Open with Open the alternate product.
Alternate Properties View basic properties, alternate product status, and change status for the alternate product. For more information, see Properties for Alternate Products.
Change Usage to Propose the alternate product to be used for all instances of the primary product or only selected instances.
Qualify Qualify the alternative to replace the primary product. The alternative product and primary product must be in the Released state.
Remove Remove the alternate product from the list.
Obsolete Make the alternate product obsolete. Obsolete objects remain listed but can no longer be used as alternate products.
Maturity Change the alternate product's maturity state.
Relations Start Relational Explorer to view the alternate item's relations with other objects. For more information, see Exploring Relations of Alternate Products.
