Editing Part Bill of Materials

Changes to the BOM in edit mode can be applied only to development phase parts before the Released state and to production phase parts in the In Work state. For all other part types and part states, a new markup is created to save the changes.

These users can edit the BOM:

  • Users with the Author, Leader, or Owner role and are assigned to the same collaborative in which the part BOM resides (App-specific roles: Design Engineer, Senior Design Engineer)
  • Users with the Author or Leader role who either created or own the BOM and have access to the same collaborative space in which the part BOM resides.
Note: With either the Author or Leader role, you can synchronize Engineering BOM Management structures with ENOVIAProduct Finder such that Product Finder will automatically update with any BOM that you create or update in Engineering BOM Management.

You can edit a BOM at any time but you can save changes only when:

  • The BOM is for a development part.
  • The part is not in the Obsolete state.
  • The BOM is for a part in the In Work state.

BOMs for parts that are past the In Work state must be changed by creating markups.

When a part is added to the BOM as a child part, you can expand the added part to view and edit its structure.

You can view the EBOM in either Quantity Rollup view or Instance view. The instance view displays each instance of a part on a separate row. The Quantity Rollup view combines the instances into one row and lists the number of parts in the Qty field.

Note: If you have customized the BOM view, some columns must be included to either create or edit BOMs.

If you add child parts to a BOM in Instance mode with QTY>1, the generated Find Number for all instances will be integers and duplicate. You can enter duplicate Find Numbers for the same instances of part if all of these conditions are met:

  • The Type, Name, and Revision of the child part instances that you add are the same.
  • The Unit of Measure for each instance you that you add is 'EA (Each)'.
  • The Reference Designator (RD) value is assigned to all the EBOM instances of the part or the RD is empty for all instances.
  • The Design Collaboration setting is the same for all part instances.

Before you begin:

Access the Engineering BOM > EBOM tab of a part. Some BOM editing commands are available only in Edit mode or when the BOM is in a specific lifecycle state. Switch to Edit mode to edit the BOM in Graph or Thumbnail view if the BOM is beyond In Work. See Part Bill of Materials.

Note: Some editing commands are available in either Quantity Rollup view or Instance view while others are available only in Instance view. See Part Bill of Materials for a list of commands and in which view they are available.

  1. In the EBOM tab, click the Instance view icon in the toolbar.
  2. To switch to Edit mode, do one of:
    • Click the Enable Edit Mode, , icon in the toolbar. All editable fields are highlighted in red.
    • Double-click a cell in an editable column you want to edit. You can edit the field as required.
    • Double-click a read-only row or a root part row. All editable fields are highlighted in red.

Note: Some BOM editing options are available without first enabling edit mode. For example, you can add child parts, replace parts, or drag parts into the BOM.

  3. Edit the BOM:

    • To change the Reference Designator, Components Location, Quantity, or Usage, use either in-cell editing or Mass Update.
    • To change the Find Number, use in-cell editing. The find number must be an integer. You can use duplicate find numbers for the instances of the same part.
    • Select the units in the Unit of Measure field and Unit Type.
      Notes:
      • You can modify the unit type for a part only if you added the part using either Insert Part > New Part As Child or Insert Part > Insert Below > New Part.
      • You cannot edit the Quantity field for the child parts of a configured parent part after you create the parent BOM in which the UOM is EA(each).

  4. Click a command to edit the BOM.

Certain commands are available only after selecting a part. In most cases, the Find Number and Quantity fields are auto-populated. This is done in both EBOM and EBOM Common views using the Add New and Add Existing commands.

The Quantity field will be auto-populated with '1.0' and Find Number field will be auto-populated with '1' if the part added is the first addition into the BOM. If the parent already has existing child rows, then the new child will have the incremented value set to the highest find number in the existing BOM at that level. The values for find number and quantity are prepopulated.

On premises only: Your administrator can change the find number values.

    • Create New. Add a new part (a part that does not exist in the database) to a BOM. See Insert Part Menu Options.
    • Remove. Remove the selected part from the BOM (the part is not removed from the database).See Part Bill of Materials.
    • Add Existing. Add an existing part (a part that is in the database) to the BOM. See Insert Part Menu Options.
    • Reorder Tree. Reorder top-level parts in the selected assembly. This command is available only for development parts in a state before the Released state and production parts in the In Work state. See Replace By Menu Options.

Undo. Undo the part selection. This is enabled when you select a row in the BOM.

When removing or replacing a BOM entry when the revision filter is "Latest," then "As Stored" connections are removed.

Change. Add selected parts to a change request or change order; or to mass release or mass Obsolete parts. See:

  5. Click Save from the page toolbar to save changes in the BOM. This command is available for development parts in any state before the Released state and production parts in the In Work state.
  6. To save all changes made in the BOM as a BOM markup, click Save Markup or Save Markup As from the Markup menu.
    • Save. Saves the changes as a new BOM markup.
    • Save As. Allows you to create a markup BOM from the changes made in the BOM. The Create BOM Markup page opens where you can enter the Name and a Description for the new BOM.
