About 3D Clippings

The 3D clipping can be added on a generative view to define the 3D limits of the geometry to be drawn in view. This simplifies the view and gives a better visualization of the required view area. This topic provides more information about 3D clipping.

Addition or Removal of 3D Clipping

This sub-topic provides information about applying or removing 3D clipping.

Right-click the view and select 3D Clipping. The following options are displayed:

  • Modify 3D Clipping: Lets you modify the 3D clipping.
  • Remove 3D Clipping: Removes the 3D clipping and restores the entire view.
  • Initialize 3D Clipping on View Background: Modifies the back, slice, or box clipping planes to coincide with background bounding box.
  • Apply 3D Clipping To: Clips the selected 3D elements in another view.

Commands Available in the Context Menu

For a 3D clipping, it is possible to execute the following context menu commands from the tree:

  • Delete: You can delete the 3D clipping specification. In this case, the generative view needs an update. After updating the view, the clipped specification is removed.
  • Cut/Copy/Paste: You can move or duplicate the 3D clipping specification from one view to another.

Automatic propagation of the 3D clipping specification: Views created from an initial view (i.e. projection, auxiliary, section, detail views) will automatically get the same 3D clipping specification as the current initial view.

About Back-Clipping Plane

You can clip the 2D and 3D backgrounds of layout views using a back-clipping plane, when most of the background of top view is of no use for the design. The back-clipping plane is parallel to, and located behind, the layout view plane. It makes all background elements that are behind it invisible.

When the layout is a representation of a 3D shape, the back-clipping plane is centered on the 3D shape. When the layout is a representation of an assembly, the back-clipping plane is centered on the assembly.

  • You can activate or deactivate the back-clipping plane for one or several views. Right-click the view(s) and select Properties. In the Visualization section, under Back Clipping Plane, select the Activate check box.
    Note: When the selected views do not have the same status (back-clipping plane activated or deactivated for all views), the check box is grayed out.
  • When a view is rotated, its clipping frame is rotated using the same angle.
  • When the scale of a view is modified, the position and size of its clipping frame is scaled as well.
  • The back-clipping plane can also be activated by default for each newly created view. For more information, see View Creation > Back Clipping Plane.
  • The back-clipping plane is taken into account:
    • When printing in raster mode, all background elements that are behind it are ignored. For more information, see Printing in raster mode.
    • When creating a drawing view, all background elements that are behind it are not generated. The boundary of back-clipped elements is displayed using a specific line type which is not customizable. For more information, see Creating a drawing view.
